Reflection of the Memo

During these fews weeks, I have been faced with some of the new and innovative teaching method I have rarely experienced before. One of the most memorable moment is the moment I learned new things such as writing a business letter.

At the beginning, I encountered some difficulties and challenges when it comes to writing a business letter respecting the format and all the other parts. My difficulties were based on two factors: firstly, on the English language and secondly on the educational system I am not really accustomed to.

Throughout my academic life, from high school to my years in college back home in Africa, the main language was French. But once here I got to learn a new language as fast as I can. This makes me think about words twice as much as native English speakers before writing. And the other factor is that the educational system here in the US is totally different from what I was accustomed to. Here almost everything is done by the student who is pushed to give his or her best relying solely on the resources found from the internet or the library.

What I like best about this course is the honest feedback from my professor. When the professor points out without exaggerating the thing I missed in my paper and calling me to rectify it or to follow some guidelines for a better outcome is really helpful. This, on one hand get my attention to a specific point I might have missed and on the other hand encourages me to do more.

What I learned about myself (and keep repeating to myself) is that I need to read more books to write better. I love reading books; when I was in high school, I use to finish a 300page novel in on day.

Ones cannot become a good writer without being a good reader in the first place.

What I would like my professor to know when grading my paper is that English is my third language after French and Arabic. That does not mean I need my professor to be soft on me but to really highlight the smallest mistake I make. Mistakes of grammar, incorrect structure of sentences or use of words. These kind of feedbacks will help me a lot in bettering my writing.

I tend to believe that this particular course is meant to prepare me for the real-world experience. After graduating from college, and after getting into the workforce, I will need to communicate with other professionals. Therefore been able to write a business letter is very substantial.
